Sir Edward William Elgar was an English composer born in Broadheath on 2nd June 1857 and died on February 23rd 1934 in Worcester.

By the age of eight, Edward was taking piano and violin lessons. At the time his father tuned the pianos in many of the grand houses of Worcestershire and he would take Edward along so that he could display his skills to the important local figures of the county.

Although Elgar is often regarded as a typically English composer, most of his musical influences were from continental Europe.

During the 1890’s Elgar gradually built up a reputation as a composer , and in this time he was awarded many accreditations, including a knighthood in 1904.
