Computing 
Intent:

  • In line with the 2014 National Curriculum for Computing, we intend to provide a high-quality computing education which equips children with the knowledge and skills required to live competently within a world that is heavily shaped by technology.
  • We recognise that children are using technology on a daily basis at home and at school and therefore, within our curriculum, aim to develop knowledge, understanding and confidence to ensure our children can apply these skills in everyday situations.
  • We recognise the need for not only digital competence but also the need for children to become responsible online citizens, ensuring our computing curriculum places equal emphasis on teaching ‘Online Safety’ in line with the expectations set out in Keeping Children Safe in Education 2020.


Implementation:

  • Computing is taught within weekly or blocked lessons as we believe regular practice is key to developing digital literacy.
  • Teachers will have a good subject knowledge and will be supported to maintain this knowledge through training and observing best practice.
  • We will deliver a clear and effective scheme that provides coverage in line with the National Curriculum which shows progression through the key stages based on the NCCE Teach Computing Scheme of Learning.
  • We will access a variety of resources which aid in the acquisition of these skills through the Curriculum Innovation Centre.
  • We will use dedicated software for the teaching of programming and coding through the use of Scratch.
  • We will consider wider curriculum links and opportunities for the safe use of digital systems.
  • We will highlight the importance of online safety through the use of the Coram SCARF Online Safety lessons; our learning environments; visits from West Yorkshire Police Service and through termly whole school assemblies which will also be made available for parents and carers.


Impact:

  • Children will be competent users of technology, feeling confident in using it in a variety of settings and situations.
  • Children will have a secure knowledge of different digital systems and their use within society.
  • Children will act as responsible, respectful and safe citizens whilst working online.
