“Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same thing, but learning another way to think about things.” Flora Lewis
Intent

  • We aim to introduce the learning of the French language to Key Stage 2 pupils in enjoyable and stimulating ways
  • We encourage childrens curiosity in foreign languages and develop an understanding of its culture
  • We aim to build the childrens cultural capital so that they are aware of similarities and differences between cultures
  • We aim to embed the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing necessary to enable children to use and apply their learning of the French language in a variety of contexts and lay the foundations for future language learning

Implementation

  • Teachers will have good subject knowledge and will be supported to maintain and improve this knowledge through training and observing best practice
  • Subject leaders will provide colleagues with support for planning, resourcing and teaching of French
  • The teaching of languages is fully inclusive to every child in Key Stage 2
  • We use Rising Stars French, a high-quality programme designed to progressively develop childrens skills in languages, to support the delivery of our language curriculum
  • Children progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of French vocabulary organised around topics
  • Children are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through conversational work, singing activities and games
  • As confidence and skill grows, children record their work in their French book through pictures, captions and sentences
  • Learning environments and classroom displays will be creative and engaging
  • We celebrate the European Day of Languages to immerse children in other cultures and languages
  • A French day is celebrated in school where children visit a French cafe to develop an understanding of French food, drink and music and play French games to understand more about the life of children in France and the culture

Impact

  • The impact of our languages curriculum is evaluated through outcomes in French books and through our own monitoring of teaching, learning and pupil voice
  • All children achieve well by developing knowledge of French and language skills on their journey through Key Stage 2
  • Children with SEND and disadvantaged children achieve the best possible outcomes
  • Knowledge taught is retained by the children and continually revisited
  • Learners are able to apply the skills they have been taught to a variety of different settings, showing independence with their learning
  • Children leave Swain House Primary ready for a successful transition to secondary school
