Intent
At Swain House Primary School, we believe that the art and design curriculum, through the use of Kapow, should:
- Engage, inspire and challenge all pupils.
- Develop childrens confidence to experiment and invent their own works of art.
- Give pupils every opportunity to develop their ability.
- Allow children the time to nurture their talents and interests.
- Enable children to express their ideas and thoughts about the world.
- Allow children to learn about the rich heritage and culture of the British Isles and beyond
Implementation
The Kapow Art scheme of work is designed in four strands that run throughout. These are:
- Making skills
- Formal elements( line, shape, tone, texture, pattern, colour)
- Knowledge of artists
- Evaluating
These strands are revisited in every unit. In our Art and Design Skills and our Formal elements of art units are then applied throughout the other units in the scheme. Key skills are revisited with increasing complexity in a spiral curriculum model.

- Is practical in nature and encourages exploratory and experimental learning through the use of sketchbooks.
At Swain House Primary school, we teach Art and Design in blocks. We teach Art and Design, Design and Technology alternatively each half term.
Impact
At Swain House Primary School, we will measure the impact of our Art and Design Curriculum through the use of:

- Pupil interviews
- Sketch books
- End of theme quizzes
- Photostories and plasma stories
Children will be able to:
- Produce creative work, exploring and recording their ideas and experiences.
- Be proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
- Evaluate and analyse creative works using subject-specific language.
- Know about great artists and the historical and cultural development of their art.
