English – Spring 1 - Journey by Aaron Becker
This half term, our pupils have been inspired by the beautiful wordless book Journey by Aaron Becker. By carefully exploring the illustrations, the children developed their vocabulary by identifying nouns, selecting adjectives, and building expanded noun phrases to describe characters and settings.
As their confidence grew, pupils practised sequencing the story and retelling events, before stepping through the famous magic red door to create imaginative worlds of their own. Using their senses and descriptive language, they wrote about what they could see, hear, and feel, becoming true storytellers along the way.
This unit has nurtured creativity, strengthened language skills, and encouraged every child to let their imagination lead the adventure. You can also see the BSL story version signed by Ms Robinson on the website too using the QR code.
PW class have been learning about the human life cycle, exploring gestation, pregnancy, and puberty, and developing their understanding of how humans grow and change from birth through to adulthood. Pupils asked lots of inquisitive questions and showed great curiosity about their own bodies.
We created our own self-portraits based on the words, 'I am......'
I am brave, I am proud, I am Deaf, I am unique.
Helen Keller Class and Paul Whittaker Class (RP classes) have been learning all about how to write a letter. They were inspired by the story The Jolly Postman.
The children were curious about how a letter gets into a postperson’s sack and is delivered to a house. This led us to explore the 'journey of a letter,' so we set off to the Post Office with their envelopes ready to be posted. The children carefully placed their 2nd class stamps in the correct spot, and we found a postbox to send the letters.
Along the way, we met a postman and a post lady and enjoyed having our photograph taken with them.
When we returned to school, we predicted where the letter would go after being posted in the red postbox. To deepen our understanding, we completed a sequencing activity on the journey of a letter.
We can’t wait to see it land on our doorstep soon! (March 2025)
