English – Spring 1 - Journey by Aaron Becker

This half term, our pupils have been inspired by the beautiful wordless book Journey by Aaron Becker. By carefully exploring the illustrations, the children developed their vocabulary by identifying nouns, selecting adjectives, and building expanded noun phrases to describe characters and settings.

As their confidence grew, pupils practised sequencing the story and retelling events, before stepping through the famous magic red door to create imaginative worlds of their own. Using their senses and descriptive language, they wrote about what they could see, hear, and feel, becoming true storytellers along the way.

This unit has nurtured creativity, strengthened language skills, and encouraged every child to let their imagination lead the adventure. You can also see the BSL story version signed by Ms Robinson on the website too using the QR code.

Science: Spring 1: Human Species
PW class have been learning about the human life cycle, exploring gestation, pregnancy, and puberty, and developing their understanding of how humans grow and change from birth through to adulthood. Pupils asked lots of inquisitive questions and showed great curiosity about their own bodies.
PSHCE: Spring 1 - PW pupils have been learning about how to keep themselves safe through our SCARF PSHE lessons. Children explored the PANTS rule, helping them understand safe and unsafe touch and how to speak up if something makes them feel uncomfortable. As the unit progressed, pupils discussed the difference between danger, risk, and hazards, and developed their confidence in recognising situations that may not be safe. Through activities, pupils were encouraged to think carefully about their choices, understand the consequences of their actions, and learn practical strategies for staying safe both in and out of school. These lessons have supported pupils in building awareness, confidence, and the skills needed to make safe decisions and actively role played in BSL too.
In English, our RP children have been reading The Little Matchstick Girl. It is a gentle but very emotional Christmas story set in Victorian times, and it has really captured the children’s attention. We’ve talked together about what life was like for children who had to work on the streets, especially in the cold winter months, and the class has shown real empathy as we explored the girl’s experiences. Through role-play, first-person writing and vocabulary work, the pupils have been learning to describe feelings, settings and characters in detail. The story has also led to some lovely discussions about hope and how different life is for children today. The pupils have produced thoughtful writing and responded with great sensitivity, showing a deep understanding of the book.

WELCOME TO OUR CLASS OF 2025-2026
Paul Whittaker Class - Year 4, 5 and 6
We created our own self-portraits based on the words, 'I am......'
I am brave, I am proud, I am Deaf, I am unique.
We used many powerful words to represent ourselves and our identities!
Halloween day!
We had some very spooky celebrations on our Halloween day, we dressed up in Halloween costumes, played spooky games, carved pumpkins and had a Halloween themed craft afternoon!
We had a lovely lesson in the food technology room baking shortbread biscuits, they were delicious!

EO and RM (Year 5 & 6)  visited the Industrial Museum last Friday, linked to their history topic - 'I'm a Victorian child - get me out of here! They took part in a Victorian school lesson, which was very strict!
They were also given Victorian names - Rose and Joshua! They enjoyed learning about Victorian life and industry but both children decided they would not want to be a Victorian child, as life was tough!

On Wednesday, 13th November, Paul Whittaker's (RP) class joined their mainstream class to watch an engaging and interactive road safety show/quiz. The children contributed answers to the quiz and enjoyed the visual videos and activities that accompanied it. They now feel more knowledgeable about road safety behaviours and traffic rules.

Helen Keller Class and Paul Whittaker Class (RP classes) have been learning all about how to write a letter. They were inspired by the story The Jolly Postman.

The children were curious about how a letter gets into a postperson’s sack and is delivered to a house. This led us to explore the 'journey of a letter,' so we set off to the Post Office with their envelopes ready to be posted. The children carefully placed their 2nd class stamps in the correct spot, and we found a postbox to send the letters.

Along the way, we met a postman and a post lady and enjoyed having our photograph taken with them.

When we returned to school, we predicted where the letter would go after being posted in the red postbox. To deepen our understanding, we completed a sequencing activity on the journey of a letter.

We can’t wait to see it land on our doorstep soon! (March 2025)

'It's Great to be ME!'
The RP KS2 children had a wonderful and engaging session with our PSHCE SCARF Life Caravan visitors. During the session, we participated in a range of activities that focused on embracing the uniqueness of each individual. We explored how each person brings something special and we discussed the importance of celebrating our differences. Through games, discussion and group exercises, the children learned how diversity strengthens our bonds and helps us grow together. Mrs Cassandro (Paul Whittaker class)
